Anupgrade from High Sierra to Catalina is a profound change, not an incremental one. There is not a single program that I used before upgrading from Mojave ( all Apple programs btw) that still work. That includes my CD player/burner which I need to RE-record the thousand CDs that the "Upgrade" to MUSIC from iTunes decided to delete.
Ihave tried to upgrade to High Sierra in the past as well (I have the 5.21gb installer in my Applications folder from Nov 20 2017) but I think whatever issue is affecting any macOS upgrade. I tried to upgrade to Mojave using the App Store "Open" method, it downloads and shows the progress bar, says 14 minutes, and then asks me to restart.

No there's no need to do any of the intermediate updates. I'm having a problem trying to install Catalina. The MacBook Air is definitely supported and has hundreds of GB's of free space. I've made sure all the programs (that aren't Apple's) are 64bit so there should be no issues.
